Why Health Coaches Are the Future of Health and Wellness

As a health coach, I believe we are the future because we empower you to take back control of your health. With the right guidance, tools, and understanding, you can shift your perspective and lifestyle to create lasting change—and that starts with understanding how much power you truly hold.

Have you ever heard of the term epigenetics?

Epigenetics is the study of how our behaviors and environment influence the way our genes are expressed. Essentially, it shows us that while we inherit our genes, they don’t control our destiny. It’s the signals we send to our genes—through our choices and environment—that determine their expression. This realization changes everything.

What is Epigenetics?

In simple terms, epigenetics is the science of how external factors “turn on” or “turn off” specific genes. These factors come from our environment and can include things like the food we eat, the stress we experience, the relationships we nurture, and even the way we think.

This means that while we may inherit a genetic predisposition for certain conditions, like type 2 diabetes, these genes don’t have to express themselves unless triggered by specific environmental signals.

So, let’s break this down further:

How Does Our Environment Send Signals to Our Nervous System?

We often think of our environment as the world outside of us, but we “ingest” it in more ways than just food. Here are some examples:

1. Food

This one’s obvious—what we eat directly influences our body. Whole, nutrient-dense foods provide signals for health, while processed, sugary, or nutrient-poor foods create stress in the body.

2. Interactions

The people we connect with, the relationships we cultivate, and the energy we surround ourselves with all send signals to our nervous system. Positive, fulfilling relationships create signals of safety and support, while toxic or stressful interactions can perpetuate chronic stress.

3. Sensory Input

What we see, hear, smell, and touch can all impact our nervous system. Listening to calming music, immersing ourselves in nature, or surrounding ourselves with beauty can reduce stress, while constant exposure to negative media, harsh environments, or sensory overload can increase it.

4. Lifestyle

Our routines, habits, and choices—like how much we sleep, move, and relax—create patterns in our body. These patterns influence gene expression and either promote health or trigger illness.

A Simple Example:

Imagine this: your father developed type 2 diabetes at 40, and now you’re told it’s “in your genes.” Does that mean you’re destined for the same outcome?

Not necessarily.

If you live a lifestyle filled with processed foods, high stress, poor sleep, and unfulfilling relationships, you’re likely sending signals that activate the gene expression for diabetes. But you have a choice.

You can shift your environment and send different signals to your nervous system. Here’s how:

  • Choose Whole Foods: Nourish your body with real, nutrient-dense food that promotes balance.
  • Create a Harmonious Home: Your home should be a sanctuary that calms your mind and body.
  • Enjoy Your Work: Find purpose in your daily activities, or shift your mindset to appreciate what you do.
  • Sleep Well: Prioritize rest to allow your body to recover and regulate itself.
  • Connect Authentically: Build relationships that are meaningful and fulfilling.
  • Move Your Body: Exercise not only strengthens your body but also balances your brain chemistry.
  • Sync with Nature: Spend time outdoors, listen to the sounds of the earth, and align your rhythms with daylight.
